On the last school day before the holidays, a train with dozens of children and teenagers on board derailed and fell into a river in Austria. According to the commander of the rescue service Anton Schilcher, 17 people were slightly injured in an accident in the province of Salzburg on Friday.

The accident happened shortly after 7 am (05:00 Greenwich) near Candlebrook. The car of the regional train fell about 4 meters above the river embankment and stopped on its side, ORF TV channel reports.

Most of the 50 passengers were children and young people. A spokeswoman for the Red Cross told DPA that they were traveling to Tamsweg. The city is an important school place for the surrounding regions.

“A large number of rescue services, including two helicopters, as well as lifeguards, mountain rescuers and police, were present at the scene,” the local authorities said in a statement.
