Jersey’s British subsidiary has announced a court decision to freeze “more than $7 billion in assets suspected of being linked” to Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, AFP reported.
According to the press release, there were also searches of real estate in Jersey that may be linked to Abramovich’s business activities. The oligarch is on the list of persons subject to British sanctions in connection with the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Another 200 people were sanctioned
Earlier, the Foreign Office in London said the UK had imposed sanctions on 206 more individuals and entities from or linked to Russia in response to the country’s attack on Ukraine.
Those targeted include Viktor Medvedchuk, a pro-Russian politician from Ukraine who was captured by Ukrainian forces on Tuesday (April 12), and Russian oil tycoon and head of the Lukoil concern, Vagit Alekperov.
But the vast majority – 178 people and organizations – are directly involved in or involved in supporting the separatist regions in eastern Ukraine, where Russia is currently concentrating its military operations. This group includes, among others, the former self-proclaimed Prime Minister of the Donetsk People’s Republic Oleksandr (Alexander) Ananchenko and the current Prime Minister of the Luhansk Republic Sergey (Sergey) Kozlov.
Abramovich Yacht Collection
According to the Financial Times, “Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich owns or is associated with a collection of five yachts with an estimated value of nearly $1 billion.” UK and EU authorities are trying to identify all assets owned by oligarchs under sanctions because of their ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
