According to Reuters, the heat wave in northern Tunisia led to record high temperatures, and in the capital of Tunisia was recorded 49 degrees Celsius. In some areas with high temperatures, the electricity supply is cut off because people stay at home with the air conditioners on and thus overload the distribution network. Local temperature records were also set in the northern cities of Bizerte and Beja yesterday.
According to the National Meteorological Institute, the previous record temperature of 46.8 degrees was recorded in the country in 1982.
A report by UN experts released on Monday said global climate change could soon spiral out of control and that the world would certainly face new devastating climatic phenomena in the coming decades or centuries.
The heat in the Mediterranean region in recent days has contributed to fires that have engulfed large areas of forest in Greece, Turkey and Algeria. The fires started yesterday and today in mountainous areas in western Tunisia.
