According to Corriere della Sera, police in Rome found a foreign tourist who drove down the Spanish Steps in a car on Wednesday night. Several steps of the stairs – one of the most famous local attractions – were damaged.
The driver of the car turned out to be a 40-year-old entrepreneur who rented a Maserati in Milan. From which country the tourist arrived is not reported. The passenger was a 30-year-old Romanian citizen, whom the man met the day before.
It is noted that the man went down the stairs in a car from Pincho Hill and at some point got stuck, trying to back out. He called a tow truck, but managed to escape before the service arrived.
Now the man has admitted his guilt and said he is ready to bear responsibility for what happened. He will be charged with damaging the UNESCO site and will be fined. The rental office may also require compensation for car repairs.
