Another resort country expects to become part of the Schengen zone shortly. We are talking about Croatia, which plans to fully enter the borders of Schengen from January 1, 2023. This was announced by the Prime Minister of Croatia Andrii Plenkovich.
“Croatia has fulfilled all the requirements to become part of the Schengen zone. We are ready to provide additional clarifications on this to anyone who wants it, so that the country can join the Schengen area on January 1, 2023,” the Croatian Prime Minister said.
According to him, the committee of the European Parliament is expected to give a positive opinion on this matter in the coming weeks. However, this will require “an assessment of the country’s readiness for such criteria as protecting the border of Croatia, as well as managing the migration situation.” “The final decision on this remains with the Council of Justice and Internal Affairs of the European Union,” added Mr. Plenkovich.
It should be noted that the hope of Croatia to enter the Schengen zone is fully officially supported by the authorities of the “main” countries of the European Union. At least German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has said he supports Schengen membership for Croatia — as well as fellow Balkan candidates Bulgaria and Romania. Mr. Plenkovich also expressed his support to the latter countries “on the way to joining the Schengen zone.”
