Dozens of people were stuck in the Channel Tunnel for several hours after a train traveling from Calais to Folkestone broke down in the longest underwater tunnel on Earth, the BBC reports.
They were evacuated through an emergency tunnel after having to abandon their cars and, after spending almost five hours in the tunnel, were put on a spare freight train and taken to Folkestone Terminal in England.
Meanwhile, passengers in Calais were told not to leave the terminal until 6 am today, and pictures showed traffic jams at the shuttle terminal as late as Tuesday evening.
The management of the Shuttle train, which carries cars through the tunnel, initially said on Twitter that the train had broken down, but the BBC later added that the train had not actually broken down but that an alarm had been triggered and an investigation was underway.
