The Poles identified the designer of the largest airport in Poland, Centralny Port Komunikacyjny (Central Communication Port), and showed how this mega-airport will look like.
According to the results of the tender, the main objects of the air gate will be designed by a consortium of British firms Foster + Partners and Buro Happold. They will determine how the passenger terminal, the railway station, and the places passengers transfer from one type of transport to another will look.
For this work, the contractors will receive 150 million euros from the Polish government, which is creating Port Komunikacyjny 40 km from Warsaw.
The British must prepare the conceptual design by mid-2023, and all other drawings necessary for construction – within 2.5 years from the moment of signing the contract. It happened on November 11, 2022.
The airport renderings released show a huge terminal with an emphasis on space, natural lighting, and landscaping.
It is assumed that a transit railway station will be located directly in front of the entrance to the terminal, from which high-speed trains will be able to reach the largest cities in Poland.
The initial throughput capacity of the mega-airport Centralny Port Komunikacyjny will be 40 million passengers per year. But architects should design the resort so that, if necessary, its capacity can be adjusted to increase or decrease.
Currently, the largest airport in Poland is Chopin Airport, located on the outskirts of Warsaw. It has two intersecting lanes and is squeezed by the infrastructure of the Polish capital. Due to this, shortly the airport will reach its maximum capacity, which will not allow a further increase in traffic.
According to pre-crisis data from 2019, Chopin Airport in Warsaw served 18.8 million passengers, which is a record for the entire airport’s history.
