On the popular tourist beach of Patong in Phuket, tourists complained of an unpleasant natural phenomenon. They are outraged by the active bloom of algae and the characteristic rotten smell, due to which they cannot swim in the sea.
To avoid a mass exodus of holidaymakers from the region’s most popular beach, authorities sent employees to clear the coast and water, The Phuket News reported.
Algae blooms on Patong Beach (Phuket) are a natural phenomenon that usually occurs in late January–March every year. However, this year the algae bloomed earlier than usual.
The physical features of Patong Bay and the absence of strong winds and waves create favorable conditions for water from the Pak Bang channel to mix with beach water, promoting plant growth.
According to ecologists, algae play an important role in the ecosystem. However, in some cases, when blooms become excessive or when certain types of algae release toxins, it can cause problems for local fauna and flora, as well as tourists.
Local authorities carry out seaweed collection operations daily. It was specified that this time their “catch” was a maximum – of three tons. Cleaning the beach and water is necessary, tourists say because it prevents unpleasant odors and maintains the attractiveness of the coast.
