According to a study examining reviews of public toilets, the city with the worst hygiene level in Europe is Riga.
Experts hired by British company Showers to You analyzed more than 8,000 Google reviews of public toilets in European cities, as well as the number of times words synonymous with “dirty” were used in the reviews.
The result was a score-based ranking highlighting travel destinations where public hygiene is a top priority.
The first place in this anti-top of the dirtiest public toilets was taken by Riga – every fifth review mentions dirt, and the cleanliness factor is only 3.44 out of 10. In second place is Spanish Madrid (4.23/10), and in third place is Valletta in Malta (4.47/10).
The most pleasant city in terms of visiting public toilets is Bucharest, where cleanliness is rated 8.7 out of 10.
The survey also found that more than three-quarters of people would only use a public toilet in an emergency for hygiene reasons.
