The US Embassy in the Bahamas issued a warning that the resort was unsafe. The warning was issued after 18 killings of tourists there since the start of the year by local gangs.
According to the diplomatic mission, “murders occurred at any time, including in broad daylight on the streets.” At night, tourists should exercise increased caution and always “keep a low profile.” Moreover, people are advised not to even try to “physically resist” an attack if one occurs.
The eastern part of the capital of the Bahamas, Nassau, is called especially dangerous.
The U.S. State Department on Friday placed the Bahamas on a list of countries where it should “exercise increased caution,” noting that the danger remains in both tourist and non-tourist areas.
