A dangerous quest in the Maldives ended in an unpleasant incident: a tourist swam too close to a shark and was bitten. The episode with the attack was caught on video, a photographer friend of the girl filmed it.

According to the Daily Mail, 30-year-old Carmen Canovas Cervello became a victim of a predator: the girl decided to swim with sharks while relaxing on the paradise island of the Maldives.

“Dramatic GoPro footage shows the sea creature circling a bikini-clad hiker before turning abruptly and attacking her. Shortly before the incident, Carmen and her buddy, 37-year-old underwater photographer Ibrahim Shafiq, were swimming peacefully with a flock of sharks for more than 45 minutes,” the source shares the details.

“At some point, the tourist broke the distance and swam too close to one of the sharks. The punishment for invading the comfort zone was swift: the predator demonstrated its superiority by clinging its teeth to Carmen’s shoulder and upper back,” the publication details the video.

“A dangerous creature weighing about 200 kilograms and more than 3 meters long left a significant mark on the diver’s body with a diameter of about 15 centimeters,” the tabloid summed up.

Having barely finished washing the wound, the diver again decided to plunge into the same place where the attack had been committed.

“We decided that the wound was inflicted by sharks only as a warning that we swam too close,” she commented.

The victim decided not to seek medical attention and continued her snorkeling routine, allowing the bite to heal independently.

The publication adds that baleen nurse sharks are common in the area of Vaavu Atoll in the Maldives, they are looking for prey in popular tourist areas.

“Nurse sharks are not naturally aggressive and tend to swim away when a human approaches. But if provoked in any way, their bite can be life-threatening due to their extremely sharp teeth and strong jaws,” warns the source.
