London is planning to open a new tourist attraction – secret tunnels from the Second World War. CNN reports more details.
These tunnels are so secret that they were once protected by the UK’s Official Secrets Act. The project will be developed by a team that includes architects from Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay and London’s Battersea Power Station.
However, this will only happen if the head of the asset management company Macquarie Group Ltd. Angus Murray, who bought the underground passages, receives approval for the plan.
“The history of the tunnels, their scale and location between London’s Golborne and the historic Square Mile could make the tunnels one of London’s most popular tourist attractions,” Murray said.
Murray expects to enter into agreements with Warner Bros., Discovery, and Amazon.com Inc., which currently own the rights to James Bond films. He also wants to preserve Britain’s deepest bar, a favorite haunt of underground engineers and other workers.
The reconstruction plan, according to preliminary calculations, will cost $269 million, and the tourist site will open no earlier than 2027.
By the way, the London tunnels were built in 1941 and 1942. They were to be used as a bomb shelter for Londoners during the Second World War. But they were never used for their intended purpose.
