Named countries that are still difficult to visit due to COVID-19

Countries are lifting restrictions, and the world has opened up for travelers again. And if earlier tourists were worried about the question “where you can fly”, now the question “where you still can’t fly” remains more relevant.

China

Before the pandemic, China was one of the most visited countries. However, now the government continues to adhere to the strategy of zero spread of coronavirus. The country is gradually restoring air traffic. But restrictions remain tight: seven-day quarantine plus three days of self-isolation, PCR test upon arrival.

However, there are early signs of reconnection: the quarantine period for eligible visitors from abroad has been reduced to seven days (plus an additional three days of self-isolation), and commercial international flights are gradually resuming after a two-year ban.

Taiwan

Taiwan’s borders have opened to business travelers and international students, but are still closed to tourists.

Hong Kong (Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China)

To visit Hong Kong, tourists still need to present a PCR test taken 48 hours before arrival. Travelers must also undergo a seven-day quarantine at their own expense. Booking confirmation must be presented at the airport upon arrival.

Also, upon arrival, travelers must undergo a PCR test and RAT. Tests will also need to be taken throughout their stay at the quarantine hotel, and they will need to arrange for additional tests at a community testing center on Days 9 and 12. Tourists who test positive will be admitted to a government hospital or detention facility.

Japan

Japan has reopened to foreign tourists from 98 low-risk countries. However, you can visit the country only as part of a government-approved tour. Those who travel to Japan as part of one of the tours must obtain a visa and present a PCR test performed within 72 hours before departure.

South Korea

South Korea is open to all types of tourists. However, travelers must take a test before departure and pre-book a PCR test to be taken at the airport or a medical facility near their accommodation within one day of arrival. If the test is positive, travelers must spend seven days in a quarantine facility.

Among countries that remain hard to reach: are Samoa, Tonga, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Niue and Fiji, which require PCR and RAT tests, as well as quarantine on arrival in case of a positive result.

Canada

Canada completed the list. The requirement for a PCR test was canceled by the country’s authorities back in April. However, tourists may be invited for random testing at the airport upon arrival. Those who test positive will be required to self-isolate for 10 days.
