When traveling to hot countries, airplane passengers dressed in summer clothes often feel very cold on board, and there is a simple explanation for this.
It turns out that the flight attendants specifically lower the temperature in the cabin of the plane to make it easier for passengers who do not feel well on board, writes The Sun concerning both flight attendants and scientists.
In particular, flight attendant Christy Kerbel told the New York Times: “Here’s a flight attendant’s secret: Sometimes we deliberately keep the plane cold. For people who struggle with airsickness, the heat makes things worse. We don’t want anyone to use these paper bags (if they get sick – ed. )”.
At the same time, specialized experts confirm that low temperatures in airplanes can prevent passengers from losing consciousness.
A study by ASTM International found that passengers are more likely to pass out during flight due to hypoxia. Fainting occurs when body tissues are not getting enough oxygen, and this condition is only worsened by high cabin pressure and high temperatures.
That is why, in order to reduce the number of incidents, airlines decided to make their cabins cool after take-off. Especially since there are known cases when hypoxia led to an airplane crash – in 2005, on a flight from Cyprus to Greece, the pressure in the cabin dropped, which led to the loss of consciousness of the crew and, ultimately, to the fall of the plane, as a result of which everyone on board died .
At the same time, Heidi Ferguson, who worked as a flight attendant for 20 years, told Best Life in an interview why some seats on airplanes are colder than others: “The coldest places in the airplane are near the window. The ventilation system is right above them, and the air temperature is most flights are very low.”
At the same time, flight attendant Victoria, who is popular on TikTok, added that you should avoid rows 7 to 15, as it can also be colder there. You should also stay away from the benches near the exits.
