In Mexico, 26-year-old Maria Fernandez Martinez Jimenez died while saving her five-year-old daughter from a shark, the New York Post reports.
It is reported that the woman and her daughter were in the water when the shark tried to attack the child. The mother managed to throw her daughter onto a floating play platform, located 22 meters from the shore, but did not have time to climb on it herself.
Rescuers rushed to help the woman, but by the time they arrived, the shark had managed to bite off Maria’s leg. The victim was pulled ashore, but they could no longer help her. The woman died from heavy blood loss.

It is noted that at that time a swimming competition was taking place near the site of the attack.
After the incident, authorities closed the beach to vacationers. Experts have not yet been able to establish what specific species the shark that attacked the people belonged to.
