The passengers of the submersible “Titan,” which disappeared in the Atlantic Ocean while descending to the sunken “Titanic,” died quickly and painlessly. This opinion was expressed in an interview with CNN by Florida International University professor Eileen Maria Marty.
“The destruction of the body of the device happened incredibly quickly, in just a fraction of a millisecond. All this probably happened before the people inside could even realize that there was a problem. It was painless,” the scientist said.
Earlier, it was reported that the wreckage of the missing submersible “Titan” may have been found in the Atlantic Ocean. “If the parts were found, then it collapsed. They died instantly … I’m sure they died on Sunday,” the oceanologist said.
Experts note that the chances of finding the remains of the dead are extremely small. And it is difficult to conclude the reasons for the destruction of the bathyscaphe until the device is raised to the surface.
According to experts, the underwater vehicle could explode due to the design. The ship’s hull was made longer so that there was more room inside for customers and other passengers. In addition, the hull was made from composites.
“They made it from composites, and usually, the case is made of titanium. Yes, the composite is very strong. Yes, composite is very durable. But we have problems with composites, and also the fact that composites break down a little differently than other materials,” – quotes Euronews, the words of marine engineer Jasper Graham-Jones.
The thickness of the hull is also in question, which was about 13 centimeters, which, according to experts, is very small when you think about the pressure that it must withstand. At the same time, the underwater vehicle, in which five people went on an excursion, did not have any permits.
Communication with the deep-sea vehicle of OceanGate Expeditions, designed to deliver tourists to the site of the sinking of the Titanic, disappeared on June 18, about an hour and 45 minutes after the dive. A few hours later, the US Navy’s top-secret acoustic detection system registered an explosion in the Atlantic Ocean, according to The Wall Street Journal.
According to the US Coast Guard, the wreckage of the bathyscaphe was found more than 200 meters from the sunken Titanic. They testify to a “catastrophic inward explosion.” The crew, which included British billionaire Hamish Harding, French deep-sea veteran Paul-Henri Nargeole, founder of the American Titanic tour company Stockton Rush, and Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his 19-year-old son Suleiman, was declared dead.
