“Stay away!” – unequivocally warn tourists on the popular “paradise island” of Bali, declaring it a “deadly attraction”. This is Angel’s Billabong rock pool, which is located between rocky cliffs on the southwestern tip of the island of Nusa Penida. The place fascinates with its beauty, and many tourists go down to take pictures of themselves in this “pool”. But not everyone managed to survive them.
The place attracts tourists from all over the world thanks to its crystal clear water and enchanting scenery. But it seems that soon the guides will add “horror” to this glory – the place takes several lives of stupid tourists a year. The last victim was 46-year-old Chinese citizen Qiuwei Anhui – he was taken into the sea while he was taking a selfie. A trained New Zealander died in front of him, diving to save his German girlfriend, who had been swept into the ocean by the waves. She was later rescued by an Australian diver.
Many such tragic stories can be told here. The cause of all misfortunes is huge waves that can easily wash a tourist off the slippery stones and hit him on the rocks – few managed to swim out. At the same time, “rogue waves” are characterized by unpredictability – some tourists, with the help of local guides, manage to avoid them.
As one of the tourists says, they were warned in time by the guide: “20 minutes passed – and he ordered us to get out immediately, in another five minutes huge waves poured in. It’s a great place, but a real death trap!” – assures one of the tourists who managed to return alive. In general, visitors are strongly advised to enjoy the view from above and not to enter the water of the “pool” even at low tide.
