The Governor of Bali, Wayan Koster, called for a quota system for foreign tourists to be introduced for a hundred years.
“Cases of uncivilized behavior on the part of foreign tourists have become more frequent in Bali, most of them came from Russia. And we cannot stop this process without imposing any sanctions, because Bali is still focused on reviving tourism after the coronavirus pandemic,” the official explained.
Therefore, the governor proposed introducing quotas for foreigners to visit Bali.
“We will no longer pursue a policy of mass tourism, we will limit it by introducing a quota system for the next 100 years. If we leave everything as it is, then we will be perceived as a budget destination, tourists with low income and spending will come,” he explained.
According to Koster, the quota mechanism has not yet been determined, but there is an option in which foreigners will have to register a year before the planned visit to Bali and wait for their turn to enter.
Since the beginning of 2023, violations of cultural norms and migration laws by foreign tourists have become more frequent in Bali. Most of the complaints come against citizens of Russia and Ukraine. During this time, 101 foreigners were deported from Indonesia, including 27 Russians.
