Four foreign tourists have been arrested in the Thai resort of Patong on charges of using unregistered electric scooters, Thai media reported. The names and nationalities of the travelers were not disclosed by police, so it is unknown whether Ukrainians were among the detainees.
Police have received several complaints through social media that people riding scooters near the Thanthip Beach Resort in Patonse pose a threat to the safety of pedestrians and other road users due to careless and reckless driving.
Last Wednesday night, one of the tourists was stopped near a police station, three others were arrested later, and all were charged as a result. Leased scooters were seized and taken to the police station. Law enforcement is currently investigating and finding the owners of the electric scooters.
Thai police have warned that anyone using an unregistered vehicle could be fined and prosecuted, although they did not specify the amount of the fine. However, they urged everyone who rides electric scooters to be more attentive to others to ensure the safety of all road users and sidewalks at the beach resort.
Electric cars have become popular in Thailand in the last decade. In 2014, they became available in Phuket when one of the emigrants opened a specialty store. Its owner believes that electric bicycles and scooters are a practical alternative to gasoline scooters and motorcycles.
