A new island has been registered in Japan after the recent eruption of an underground volcano. The land formed 1,200 kilometers south of Tokyo, The Guardian reports.
Fukashi Maeno, associate professor at the Institute of Earthquake Research at the University of Tokyo, confirmed that the institution had confirmed the registration of the new island.
By the way, islands appear quite often in Japan – the previous one, for example, appeared only two years ago. This is all due to the large number of active underwater volcanoes that periodically erupt and push land to the surface.
However, islands disappear as often as they appear, going underwater. Therefore, it is not possible to fix this immediately. Japan now has 14,125 islands, most of which are uninhabited.
