A minibus crash in Peru has claimed the lives of four tourists. 16 people were injured, four of them French. The incident occurred after visiting the Machu Picchu fortress, local authorities reported, citing France Press.
According to regional authorities in Cusco, two of the dead were Colombians, and two more have not been officially identified.
In addition to the four French, two Greeks, two Canadians, two Israelis, two Argentines, two Peruvians, one Dutchman, and another unidentified tourist were among the wounded.
The disaster occurred on the night from Sunday to Monday, a hundred kilometers from Cusco, the ancient capital of the Incas, and the main point of departure for visiting Machu Picchu.
The minibus fell into “a ravine more than 100 meters deep,” Labor and Tourism Minister Roberto Sanchez said, adding that “there was fog at the time of the crash.”
The minister added that some of the wounded had to be transported to the capital, Lima, by aircraft provided by the air force.
According to AFP, traffic accidents are a common occurrence in Peru due to the poor condition of the road network, speeding, or lack of markings.
