Swedish Coast Guard has launched an investigation after several dead sharks were spotted in a harbor north of Gothenburg, according to DPA.
A large number of dead lobsters and various species of large fish were found in the harbor of Gothenburg over the weekend.
Pinnipeds are a protected species in Sweden, they are forbidden to catch, although it is possible that they may accidentally fall into fishing nets.
Jonas Berg, director of the local coast guard, said the incident was both sad and very serious. There are laws that protect the oceans and their biodiversity, and those who do not comply are guilty of the crime, he said.
The purpose of the investigation is to determine whether a crime has been committed.
A video circulated in the Swedish media shows dead and dying fish on the seabed. The author of the recording told Dagens Nieheter that, in his opinion, the animals were dropped from a fishing boat.
According to the online publication Deep Sea Reporter, which was the first to report the dead animals, the bodies of about 60 sharks and several stingrays were found at the scene.
