German Chancellor candidate from the conservative CDU / CSU bloc Armin Laschet has threatened Russia with sanctions if the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline is used against Ukraine. Lachet made the statement in an interview with the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita, excerpts from the conversation quoted by Die Welt.
“If Russia takes aggressive action against Ukraine, Germany will take measures at the national level and will advocate punitive measures within the European Union,” said the candidate for chancellor.
According to him, in this way Germany will “prevent” the use of “Nord Stream-2” as a “geopolitical weapon”. Lachet says the US-Germany gas pipeline agreement provides a tool by which they can “work together to bring Russia to justice for destructive actions.”
At the same time, he added that Ukraine’s sovereignty and security “should be a priority of Germany’s foreign policy.”
