NATO leaders have extended the mandate of alliance leader Jens Stoltenberg for another year, according to AFP.
“It is a great honor for me to decide that NATO Heads of State and Government will extend my term as Secretary General until 30 September 2023. As we face the most serious security crisis of the last generation, we are united in keeping the Alliance safe, ”Stoltenberg wrote on Twitter.
On Wednesday, NRK said that the Norwegian Ministry of Finance is preparing for the fact that Stoltenberg will not take the post of managing the Central Bank until the end of the year, as previously planned. Asked by reporters whether he could remain NATO Secretary General due to the current situation in Europe, Stoltenberg himself said that the decision would depend on the countries of the organization. He has previously confirmed several times that he intends to start working as director of the Central Bank of Norway at the end of the year. According to the Norwegian Telegraph Service, representatives of several bloc countries tried to persuade Stoltenberg to remain secretary general, in particular after it became known that he had been appointed head of the Central Bank.
Stoltenberg’s new appointment was announced in early February. Sources then said that he would take office “about December 1” after the expiration of his term as Secretary General of the Alliance on October 1, reminds BGNES.
The bank’s current manager, Eystein Olsen, will retire this month at the age of 70. Stoltenberg will head the Central Bank for six years. From March 1, until his inauguration, the bank will be temporarily managed by Vice President Ida Walden Bach.
