Research: Loss of sense of smell due to COVID-19 can last up to 3 years

People who have lost their sense of smell after being infected with the coronavirus can fully recover in just three years, quotes a British professor of rhinology, the Daily Mail.

This is one of the most common symptoms of previous variants of the new coronavirus.

“Some patients can wait up to three years for the sense of smell to fully return because it takes time to recover,” explains Carl Philpott of the Norwich Medical Institute at the University of East Anglia.

According to him, in people who suffer from such disorders for a long time, the virus probably penetrated deeper into the brain.

The expert’s theory is based on studies that examined the brains of patients who died of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) belonging to the same family of viruses as the causative agent COVID-19 SARS-CoV-2. “However, there is still no clarity about the exact mechanism that causes long-term failures,” Philpott added.

According to a study published in June, more than 80% of survivors of COVID-19 recover their sense of smell within four months of recovery. According to the study, 5% of people do not regain their sense of smell even a year after infection with new coronaviruses.

Experts are still unsure of the exact cause of olfactory loss in patients with COVID-19. This is the reason why it is not possible to find a cure.
