A hundred times more infections than two weeks ago. The omicron variant prevails in Italy. Currently, the incidence rate is 25 percent of all infections. However, the bad news doesn’t end there. Unfortunately, the Italian authorities have also provided data on infections. They show they have broken a new record for the current wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
There is practically no doubt about it. The omicron variant, which has so far been found in trace amounts in Italy, is gaining momentum and has become both the most infectious and dominant variant of the coronavirus.
One of the representatives of the Ministry of Health stated bluntly that it was “an explosion per micron.” And these words are nothing to be surprised at. Two weeks after the first case of infection with the omicron variant was detected in Italy, the incidence rate was 0.2-0.3 percent. all COVID-19 infections. Currently, the incidence has increased a hundredfold and is 25 percent. Lombardy lags behind the national average. In this region, the incidence rate reaches 30 percent of all infections.
Infection record
It is no coincidence that these numbers were released only now, when the Italian authorities announced that they have set a new daily record for the number of infections in the current wave of the pandemic – more than 36,000. 146 people have died due to COVID-19.
New restrictions
The government of Mario Draghi must also fight the pandemic. On Thursday, Italians will learn about new restrictions due to the deterioration of the sanitary and epidemiological situation in the country. According to the Italian press, the obligation to wear masks on the street will resume.
