A tornado on the small Italian island of Pantelleria last night killed two people and injured several others, the AP and DPA reported.
The hurricane toppled power poles and trees, damaged the roofs of houses, local fire services said. The Italian news agency ANSA reported that the dead were residents of the Mediterranean island, which is a popular tourist destination.

Vincenzo Campo, the mayor of Pantelleria, told Sky Te Je 24 that two of the nine wounded were in critical condition. He said no one was missing.
The tornado damaged six more cars, at least one of which overturned. Many of the victims were in their cars.
Pantelleria with a population of almost eight thousand people is located between Sicily and Tunisia.
