The protests of Turkish hoteliers, caused by two or even threefold increase in electricity prices, are spreading throughout Turkey like summer forest fires. Starting in Izmir, they “lit up” in the resort of Antalya, Bodrum and other places. The problem is that hotels, which are extremely dependent on electricity due to the large number of air conditioners, simply will not be able to pay such bills and close en masse.
Thus, in Antalya, a joint statement was issued by the Antalya Chamber of Commerce (ATSO), 36 Professional Committee of the group of hotels and similar accommodation facilities. “Normal tourist seasons ended in 2019, due to the pandemic – because of it, many tourism industries, which suffered losses in 2020 by 92.5% and in 2021 by 60% are already at risk of closure,” – they say. The protest is still relatively peaceful – a decision has been made to submit to the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources requests to cancel or postpone the increase in the cost of electricity on behalf of hoteliers, or at least to reconcile rising electricity prices with official inflation.
At the little-known Turkish resort of лиanlıurfe, hoteliers also met with Khalil Peltek, Chairman of the Board of the Chamber of Commerce, and Jevahir Asuman Yazmaji, Member of the Board of Directors. They also say that due to high electricity bills and rising production costs, the resort may simply cease to exist – hotels are unlikely to last a month without going bankrupt. The outrage spread to Cappadocia.
Jakup Dinler, head of Kayakapı Turizm in Cappadocia and one of the hotel owners, presented the electricity bills of the two facilities in December and January in his Twitter account. “The December electricity bill, which amounted to 91,000 lire at one of the facilities, increased to 205,000 lire in January, and the electricity bill by 51,000 lire at the second facility increased to 132,000 lire in January. The cost is more or less the same! Bills 2.25 – 2.5 times more! Dear partners, how are you? Are you all right? ”The hotelier asked sarcastically.
In Izmir, we will remind, business reached exit of hoteliers on the street. “We can’t afford to pay that rate. Let’s give them the keys and close, “they said. They also posted the following slogan: “Electricity, water, natural gas are rights, they cannot be sold.” Read more about the protests in Izmir at the link.
