EU countries are working on a fifth package of sanctions against Russia, and are considering imposing an oil embargo, according to Reuters, citing its sources.
“We are working on the fifth round of sanctions, and many new names are being proposed,” a senior European diplomat told the agency on condition of anonymity.
It is said that the former restrictions have not led to a “change of course towards Ukraine”, and therefore European countries have yet to decide whether to impose an embargo on Russian oil supplies or not.
According to the agency, the Baltic states, in particular Lithuania, insist on such restrictive measures, and Germany warns against haste, as energy prices in Europe are already high.
Diplomats say an energy embargo could be imposed in the event of “massive bombings of Kyiv” or the use of “chemical weapons”. EU foreign ministers will discuss sanctions today.
