UK to tighten visa rules due to record immigration

According to the Daily Mail, UK authorities announced tightening visa rules due to record immigration into the country.

The new rules will come into force in January 2024.

In particular, they will affect student visas, the number of which will be significantly reduced. Most students will be banned from bringing their families to the UK and will no longer be able to switch to work visas until they have completed their studies. The amount of money students must have in their accounts to finance their stay in the UK will also be reviewed.

According to the British Office for National Statistics, over the past year, there has been a sharp increase in legal migration from 700,000 to 1 million people. Last year, international students brought 136,000 dependent family members to the UK, up from just 16,000 in 2019.

The Home Office expects these measures will prevent student visas from being used as a back door to work in the UK.
