New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has resigned today over allegations of sexual harassment against 11 women. Reuters reported that he was under strong political pressure to resign, including from President Joe Biden.
Kuomo, a 63-year-old Democrat, has been governor of New York since 2011 and was re-elected twice, as was his father, Mario Cuomo. He previously served as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in President Bill Clinton’s administration.
Speaking on U.S. television, Cuomo dismissed allegations of misconduct, saying most of them, especially the most serious ones, contained many “inaccuracies,” but acknowledged that given the situation, he had better resign.
His resignation will take effect in 14 days. He will be replaced by Deputy Governor Katie Hokul, who will become the first female governor of New York State in its 233-year history.
