The holy month of Ramadan for Muslims begins today in most of the Middle East, according to world agencies.
The beginning is determined by a methodology that can lead to slight differences in when a country decides to start a month. For example, today it begins in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey, Syria, Sudan and the United Arab Emirates. Tomorrow it will begin in Indonesia, as well as for some Shiites in Lebanon, Iran and Iraq, according to the Associated Press.
This year, Ramadan, which is the occasion for large family gatherings, is marked by rising prices due to the war in Ukraine. Fuel and food prices have risen, overshadowing Ramadan. Rising prices now also affect many people who have already suffered from conflicts and crises in their countries, such as Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Sudan and Yemen.
