A woman’s leg was amputated at Bangkok airport after a fall on a passenger conveyor.
The incident took place at Bangkok airport on June 29. According to the publication, the 57-year-old tourist was supposed to board a morning flight from Bangkok’s Don Muang Airport to Nakhon Si Thammarat province.
At the time of the incident, the woman was moving along the travolator between terminals 4 and 5. She fell, after which her leg began to be pulled inside the mechanism, which led to injury. According to airport officials, the injury was so severe that the medical team eventually had to amputate her left leg above the knee.
Footage posted online shows the woman’s lower leg caught under a belt at the end of the aisle. The suitcase next to her was missing two wheels and the yellow comb plates were broken.
According to the airport management, the mechanism was in good condition. They believe that the woman herself could damage the surface of the device when she fell.
However, they promise to conduct an investigation to find out if the injury was caused by a malfunction of the mechanism or the negligence of airport employees. According to the director of the airport, the walkways at the airport are checked daily and monthly.
“On behalf of Don Muang International Airport, I would like to express my deepest condolences in connection with the incident. We have made sure that such an accident does not happen again,” airport director Karun Tanakuljirapat said at a press conference.
He also noted that the airport will be fully responsible for the woman’s medical expenses and is open to negotiations on other compensation.
