Summer vacations in Spain have been marred by an influx of “stinky” algae, forcing vacationers there to shun some previously popular vacation spots along the southern coast and look for alternatives. Resort guests do not want to bathe in slime and cover their noses. This was reported by the British newspaper Express.
We are talking about rugulopteryx Okamura algae – they have killed the entire popular coast of Canos de Meca in Cádiz. As a bonus – putrid smell. It is believed that the algae came to the resort from Asia in the ballast tanks of cargo ships.
Known for its snow-white sandy beaches and picturesque sea views, Canos de Meca Beach in Cádiz used to be considered one of the most beautiful places and did not experience algae blooms. But now it has become practically unsuitable for recreation in July-August. This situation is forcing many travelers to cancel their resort bookings this season.
Hotel owners also see the problem and agree that it is the poisonous smell from “tons” of algae on the beach and in the water that repels travelers. When decomposing, these plants give off a disgusting smell, which makes their presence unpleasant for beachgoers, they noted.
It was clarified that the first influx took place several years ago, this year the situation is even worse. Active reproduction is facilitated by rising sea temperatures. Environmental expert Lola Illescas explained that the problem has spread along the coast and is affecting holidaymakers in the Strait of Gibraltar area. “It’s a real disaster,” she said, adding that the algae had nothing to fear because they had no predators, that is, those who actively ate them and thus controlled reproduction. They spread quickly, clinging to rocky beaches and bathing bodies. Only a person can fight them.
The outflow of tourists from the region due to sea flowering plants was also confirmed by the local PSEO party. The accumulation of algae and the unpleasant smell that accompanies their appearance led to the fact that many vacationers simply began to leave the resort to avoid the stench. Everything that is happening is worse than the coronavirus pandemic – it has a bad effect on the local economy. Summer is always a busy tourist season in Spain, but this year hoteliers complain that there are still many vacancies. Local authorities are taking action, using tractors and excavators to clean the beaches, but it’s probably not enough.
