Turkey will introduce a “residency tax” on tourists

As Turizm Guncel writes, from January 1, 2023, Turkey will introduce a mandatory “residential tax” – a levy of 2% on all services, including accommodation, sold on the territory of hotels, resorts, apart-hotels, guest houses, and other facilities accommodation.

So far, there is no exact data on how this tax will be levied on tourists. In particular, it is not clear how it will be paid by organized tourists arriving as part of package tours. Probably, for them, it will be included in the total cost of the tour.

Recall that Turkey decided to introduce this tax in 2019, but the entry into force of the relevant law was postponed several times, including due to the coronavirus pandemic and the general decline in the tourism sector. However, this year tourism in Turkey showed the best pace of recovery in the Mediterranean region, which was the reason for the introduction of new fees for tourists.
