From July 1, 2022, to visit Venice, you will need to pre-register on a special website or in a mobile application, after which the tourist receives a QR code. For now, this measure will be experimental, but bookings will become mandatory from January.
The probable reason for this decision could be the flow of tourists on the Easter weekend of this year: the city was visited by almost 500,000 tourists. Therefore, the authorities again returned to the idea of regulation and paid access to the city, which was announced back in 2019. The entire infrastructure for the implementation of this project has been prepared.
From mid-January 2023, pre-booking to visit Venice will become mandatory, as will the payment of the “entrance tax”. It is assumed that you will have to pay from 3 to 10 euros per person, depending on the season and day of the week. On weekends and days of special events, when the number of tourists exceeds 40 thousand people, the entrance ticket will cost at least 10 euros.
The municipality of Venice promises to present a detailed differentiation of future fees by November. Local residents and those working in the city, as well as tourists who stay in Venice for the night in a hotel, will be exempt from paying the tax. Accordingly, the measure will primarily affect foreigners traveling in Italy with accommodation outside of hotels.
