“The government of Sri Lanka has banned the population from using social networks and imposed a curfew (from April 1),” said a local blogger. The blocking of messengers such as WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and the imposition of a state of emergency are linked to anti-government rallies that swept the country after locals were unable to provide themselves with food and basic necessities, as well as hours of power outages.
“The day started with good news, as they say – the phone received a message from an Internet provider. When they will be allowed to communicate in messengers again – they will announce, it is said in the message. That’s how the government decided to fight the dissatisfied, who have been storming the presidential palace for several days and demanding the resignation of the government,” the author said.
It is also specified that the situation in the country is critical:
- Public transport is not working, roads are empty, locals are denied access to neighboring settlements, but tourists are not yet restricted or stopped from moving.
- Closed supermarkets, catering establishments, too, most establishments.
- At thematic forums and communities, tourists pass on the facilities they have opened to date.
- The ban includes all or part of social networks and messaging platforms Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, WhatsApp, Viber, Telegram and Facebook Messenger.
- Protests are growing in the cities.
