Tourists in Berlin can visit 60 museums for free every first Sunday of the month. The promotion was temporarily suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic but has resumed. The decision to extend the program and its funding for the next two years was made by Berlin’s culture senator Joe Chialo.
It was reported that this exceptional offer allows not only residents but also tourists to explore the culture of the German city. The list of museums available to visit includes both large and popular ones such as the Altes Museum, Gemäldegalerie, and the Pergamum Museum, as well as small ones such as the Werkbundarchiv, the Museum of Decorative Arts, and the Knoblauchhaus Museum. Museums offer exhibitions on various topics: art, design, religion, history, nature, everyday culture, urban history, and technology. Sunday museum days in Berlin provide entertainment for everyone.
The Sunday Museums website said that Museum Sunday in 2023 had attracted an impressive number of visitors. During this time, 750,000 people visited it, which is 35% more than the previous year. The program has become especially popular among young people.
Despite the exciting ideas of a free visit, for guaranteed access to the most popular places such as the Altes Museum, Gemäldegalerie, and Pergamon Museum. Therefore, it is important to book a ticket in advance. For example, if you want to attend the “Museum Sunday” event, the organizers advised you to make a reservation a week before the event.
But for those who prefer a free approach, there is no need to worry about reservations. Many museums accept tourists without a prior appointment.
