The Thessaloniki Metro, Greece’s second-largest urban transport system and one of its newest infrastructure projects, will temporarily shut down for a month.
According to Greek media, the metro will suspend operations from November 10 to December 10 to conduct technical tests and safety checks related to the network’s expansion toward the Kalamaria district in the eastern part of the city.
Until November 9, trains will operate under a modified schedule: first departures at 6:30 a.m. (8:00 a.m. on weekends) and last runs around 11:00 p.m., reports New Money.
During the closure, a dedicated bus service will run to connect key metro stations.
Deputy Transport Minister Nikos Tachiaos said another temporary shutdown is planned for February 2026 as part of further integration testing.
The Thessaloniki Metro officially opened on November 30, 2024, after more than two decades of construction, and is seen as a milestone in modernizing Greece’s urban transport network.
