The results of the summer of 2022, marked by mass delays and air chaos, were summed up by the experts of American CNN. In their rating, the worst airports in the world were highlighted, marked by the highest number of cancellations and delays. Many of the heroes of the summer news, such as London’s Gatwick, got into them, but there are also surprises – for example, almost the entire top 10 in terms of cancellations were occupied by Chinese airports, which did not open so fully after the covid, and Canadians were the leader in the number of cancellations.
Overall, the worst airports with the highest percentage of delayed flights worldwide were:
- Toronto Pearson International Airport: 51.9%
- Montreal-Trudeau International Airport: 47.8%
- Frankfurt International Airport: 44.5%
- Umberto Delgado Airport (Lisbon): 43%
- London Gatwick Airport: 42%
- Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport: 41.6%
- Munich International Airport: 40.1%
- Manchester Airport: 39%
- Athens International Airport: 38.5%
- Vancouver International Airport: 37.8%
As for airports with “huge cancellation rates”, the top ten was almost entirely China – the exceptions were only three airports, one in Indonesia and two in the US. A total of ten looks like this:
- Shanghai Pudong International Airport (China): 29.8%
- Xian Xianyang International Airport (China): 15.6%
- Beijing Capital International Airport (China): 14.7%
- Nanjing Lukou International Airport (China): 14.4%
- Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (China): 9.5%
- Shenzhen Baoan International Airport (China): 9.1%
- Sukarno-Hatta International Airport (Indonesia): 8.3%
- Wuhan Tianhe International Airport (China): 8.2%
- Newark Liberty International Airport (USA): 6.7%
- La Guardia Airport (USA): 6.7%
The publication also compiled a separate list of US airports. On average, the anti-leaders of the rating delayed at least a quarter of all flights. Chicago Midway “won” with almost 38% delays.
