A tourist sitting in the plane near the aisle refused to switch places with the boy in the middle seat, which she later regretted. On board, he drank several liters of liquid and got up to use the toilet 4 times during the three-hour flight, Dailystar writes.
On long-haul flights, many people prefer to sit near the aisle so that it’s easy to stand up and stretch your legs or go to the bathroom. But these seats have one drawback: you have to constantly move to let the passengers sitting next to you get out. One woman was so enraged by a fellow traveler who frequently used the toilet that she even refused to give way to him.
A guy described this strange situation on the Reddit forum, asking if he was wrong. During the flight, the tourist drank more than two liters of water, because of which he had to use the toilet four times in three hours.
“Recently, I flew home for the holidays. The flight lasted three hours. I had read that dehydration happens twice as fast on a plane as anywhere else, so I took two 1-liter water bottles with me and decided to drink them both during the flight (it should be noted that I am quite a large person and an athlete). I booked a middle seat because I’m on a budget and don’t care about the aisle or the window, and I used the restroom four times during the flight,” the guy wrote on the forum.
He noted that the more often he asked to let him go to the toilet, the angrier his companion on the aisle seat became. “When I used the toilet for the third time, she asked me if I could try to stay there for the rest of the flight so she could sleep. I did not take her request too seriously and continued to drink water. When I got up for the fourth time, she told me I was being rude by not complying with her request. I told her that either yes, or I’ll pee on the spot, so going to the toilet is the best option,” the tourist continued.
The woman assumed that he had health problems and asked about it. The guy replied: “No, it’s none of your business.” And then he offered to switch places so as not to climb over her every time during a trip to the toilet. However, the tourist refused.
“She continued to press me, and I offered to call the flight attendant because I was uncomfortable solving this problem on my own. The flight attendant took my side, but at home, I had disagreements with my family about this situation. Some said I had done nothing wrong, I had the right to drink water and I wasn’t breaking the rules, while others said it was rude to drink so much water on a flight if I couldn’t keep it down, especially if the person in the aisle was asleep. So, I wonder if people on Reddit think I’m an asshole or not?” – added the guy at the end of the post on the forum.
In the comments, most people thought that the guy was completely wrong to drink so much liquid on such a short flight. One user wrote: “I think the maximum number of times I’ve ever had to let one person out was about four. But it was a 15-hour flight. The author of the thread is ridiculous and ridiculous, considering that the flight was only 3 hours and he does not have a problem with the urinary system. Another person added: “I have a tiny bladder so I go to the toilet a lot on flights. So I booked an aisle seat when I fly. Because I’m not an asshole like the author.”
Some people pointed out that the boy drank a dangerous amount of water. “A flight attendant is recommended to drink a cup (or half a bottle) of water per hour of flight,” explained a user who works as a flight attendant. “I am genuinely concerned about the amount of water the author is consuming,” another user wrote. And another even warned: “Author, the toxicity of water is quite real and very dangerous. You were much more likely to get seriously ill from the toxicity of the water than you were from dehydration on a three-hour flight.’
While flying can cause dehydration, overhydration can also be dangerous. Water intoxication – or hyponatremia – can develop if you drink too much water in a short period. It is unlikely that two liters of water in three hours will cause this condition, but since this is the daily norm, there is no need to drink so much water in one flight.
Another commenter said: “Three hours on a plane doesn’t dehydrate you enough to hurt you. If you plan to do this on the next flight, pay for an aisle seat or prepare to have another angry neighbor.”
