An apocalyptic landscape – scorched earth, fire-ravaged houses and hotels, ash-covered beaches, and sea waves – this is the picture of the sad end of tourism in the famous resort, which was captured by a drone that recorded the destruction caused by forest fires on the island of Rhodes.
The fire has been raging for more than 10 days, with temperatures still exceeding 40 degrees, making it difficult to fight the fire. As they fear in Greece, the matter will not be limited to Rhodes alone.
In total, 594 fires broke out in the country over the last 10 days, and in addition to Rhodes, the island of Corfu and Euboea were also affected. At the same time, 571 fires were brought under control before they spread.
In Rhodes itself, the statistics are frightening – 5 people died from the fire and more than 20,000 people – including foreign tourists – were evacuated from the threatened areas.
It was the largest fire evacuation in the country’s history. According to a statement made by the Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service (CAMS) of the European Union (EU), the forest fires that Greece has been battling since July 17 have been recorded as the biggest fires in 20 years.
