It is too optimistic to expect a “boom” of tourists and even a serious increase this summer, but there will be tourists in Turkey. The speech of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after the return of the latter from Brussels on the occasion of the Extraordinary Summit of NATO Heads of State and Government was such an encouraging message. The President assured the Turkish tourism industry that he had managed to negotiate with all the heads of state, including on tourism, and he was one of the first to mention the Russian president instead of NATO representatives.
“We will not obstruct the path of our citizens to Turkey,” the Turkish president was quoted as saying by Vladimir Putin. Erdogan also stressed that Turkey’s tourism minister “is making great efforts to continue negotiations with countries on tourism.”
In connection with Russia, it was about paying in rubles. “It may be a way out for us if we start working with our national currency. We have already offered this to Russia: we can do it with rubles and Turkish lira. Let’s make it work,” said the Turkish president. He also reminded that an average of 5 million tourists a year came to Turkey from Russia. And Turkey expects to receive this amount. In addition to Russia, President Erdogan named Poland, Great Britain and Germany as promising markets. He said he had held talks with Polish President Andrzej Duda, who he said “advises Polish tourists to go to Turkey”, as well as with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and representatives of the United Kingdom.
