A video of climber Sibe Vanhee showing himself and his team sleeping on a rock in Patagonia has sparked controversy among commentators.
The author of the video, a 32-year-old professional climber from Belgium, shared unique footage of his stay in Torres del Paine National Park in Chile. The post, published with the caption “Our 5-star hotel in Patagonia,” quickly went viral and has already collected more than 17 million views.
The video, filmed using a special camera, shows breathtaking views from the mountain and the sounds of strong winds blowing through tents hanging on the cliff. Comments from netizens are divided: some express admiration and surprise at the willpower and courage of the climbers, while others do not understand the meaning of such an extreme pastime and consider it dangerous.
“This is the dumbest thing in the world, I’m sorry. Right after climbing Everest, this is complete nonsense”, “This is really stupid. I can’t find any meaning for this, it doesn’t prove bravery”, “I will never understand the reason for this”, – wrote commentators who condemned the dangerous hobby.
But there were many who admired the courage of Sibe Vanha:
“Everyone is negative, like they don’t understand who is doing this, and I’m in awe of how he even has the mental strength to do it. I would be shaking,” “Why are there so many negative comments? He doesn’t tell you to do it. I think this is very amazing and brave. People should do what makes them happy, not what others think,” “I only wish I had the courage to do something like that,” “Wow! Let’s talk about how to live every day to the fullest. Because of this, worrying about all this nonsense is so stupid. Thank you very much,” the commentators wrote.
By the way, a 32-year-old climber from Belgium, together with his colleagues, conducted a unique ascent along the Riders on the Storm route on the eastern side of the central granite tower of the Torres del Paine massif. This route, first climbed in 1991, is considered one of the most famous and difficult in Patagonia. Vanhee and his team completed the first free ascent using no special climbing equipment, just to ensure safety.
It should be noted that Sibe Vanhee, who is also a consultant-trainer and public speaker, has 14 years of adventure mountaineering experience.
