On February 11 in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) lightning struck the top of the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer.
The incident occurred during a thunderstorm that broke out the night before. The blow hit the head of the sculpture. The statue, fortunately, was not damaged.
The statue of Jesus Christ is located on top of a mountain, at an altitude of more than 700 m. According to the National Institute for Space Research, the sculpture receives an average of six lightning strikes per year.
In 2014, after another such blow, it had to be repaired – the tip of the thumb on the right hand of the statue broke off. Then it was decided to install additional lightning rods.
