Spain and Morocco have returned to discussing the project to build a tunnel under Gibraltar: they want to connect Madrid and Casablanca by rail.
The Moroccan national company for the exploration of the Strait of Gibraltar (Société Nationale d’Etudes du Détroit de Gibraltar) stated that the railway between Casablanca and Madrid will be the next stage in the development of the mega tunnel project under Gibraltar.
This idea first became known in the late 1970s, but the countries did not begin implementing the project due to political differences.
In October 2022, the Spanish Society for Research into Fixed Communications across the Strait of Gibraltar (SEGESCA) received €750,000 from the Spanish budget to carry out a feasibility study on the tunnel infrastructure. Its construction is planned to be completed by 2030.
