South Korean authorities have ordered Gimpo and Incheon International Airports near the capital Seoul to temporarily suspend all flights and arrivals after North Korean drones managed to break through defenses and fly through the demilitarized zone separating the two countries.
The South Korean military confirmed they had scrambled fighter jets and attack helicopters on Monday afternoon. This happened after North Korean drones freely crossed the demarcation line through the air.
Local media reported that at least one drone even managed to fly over the South Korean capital of Seoul before being shot down.
Yonhap News Agency officially reported that Gimpo and Incheon International Airports were forced to suspend all operations for about an hour due to security threats at the request of the Ministry of Defense.
The South Korean Ministry of Infrastructure and Transportation confirmed that it had stopped flights in the Seoul area between approximately 13:00 and 14:00 on Monday, but declined to confirm the reason for the decision.
