A dangerously high amount of feces has been found in the waters of the popular beach, NewYorkPost reports.
According to the local publication Diario de Ibiza, Playa Pinet on the famous Spanish island had to be closed after water tests in the bay showed fecal levels “exceeding safe limits”.
According to local doctors, contaminated water increases the risk of infection with E. coli and E. enterococci. According to the Mayo Clinic, E. coli can lead to severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea, and vomiting. Enterococcal bacteria infection, also called E. faecalis, can cause fatigue, nausea, fever, and chills.
“This is a temporary solution and the Department of the Environment is currently investigating the cause of the pollution,” the San Josep City Council said in a statement, according to a translation provided by local media.
Today, the beach remains closed pending the results of another test. Red flags are posted on the beach to keep visitors out of the water. Water in Playa Pinet is tested weekly for health risks and potential contamination, the city council said.
