An American Airlines plane made an emergency return to the airport of departure due to mass nausea on board the aircraft.
Passengers suddenly felt unwell due to the smell of acetone, which exuded from hand luggage. Soon some of them began to vomit.
After landing, the plane was sent to a special area, where it was inspected by the fire and rescue service. Passengers and crew members were evacuated, and five airline employees were taken to the medical center as a precautionary measure. Passengers were placed in a hotel, and the flight was rescheduled for the next day.
According to the Health and Human Services, inhaling acetone fumes can irritate the nose, lungs, throat, and eyes. In addition, prolonged exposure to the odor can cause headaches, nausea, confusion, increased heart rate, and vomiting.
