The NHK television channel reports that the Sakurajima volcano erupted in Japan, throwing out a column of ash 5 km high.
The volcano is located near the city of Kagoshima. It started erupting today.
After the “explosive eruption of an active volcano,” the Japan Meteorological Agency raised the alert level to three, and a crisis headquarters was created at the Prime Minister’s Office.
It is clarified that the ash column reached such a height for the first time since 2020. In addition, large volcanic blocks were seen flying from the crater to a height of up to 1,300 m. Ashfalls are expected in the vicinity of the volcano.
